Windows Vista - General CD/CD-RW/DVD Optical Drive Troubleshooting

Note: Some of the following procedures may require the use of an administrative username and password. Please click Continue or enter the proper username and password when prompted.

  1. Verify that the CD is seated correctly in the drive tray.

  2. Verify that the label is facing away from the drive tray.

  3. Verify that the media has no dirt or scratches.

  4. Verify that the CD works in another CD/DVD drive or another computer.

  5. Try another CD in the drive, make sure to try different types (audio, data, DVD, and so forth).

  6. Verify that the drive can support the disc:
    • If the disc is a DVD, make sure that the optical drive is a DVD drive.
    • Verify that the DVD is Region 1.
    • Verify that there is DVD-playing software loaded on the computer.

  7. Reseat the drive in the computer chassis (notebooks only) making sure it is fully seated and all cables are connected correctly.

  8. Try the drive in the other modular drive bay (600 Series notebooks).

  9. Clean the optical light on the device (notebooks only).

  10. Remove the CD\CD-RW\DVD drive using Device Manager and then reinstall the drive using a system scan:
    1. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: device, and then click Device Manager.
    2. In Device Manager, click on the Plus (+) sign in front of DVD/CD-ROM Drives, right-click on the drive you wish to remove, and then click Uninstall.
    3. Right-click DVD/CD-ROM Drives and then click Scan for Hardware Changes.
    4. Let Windows install the drive it finds and restart.
