Desktop - No POST/No Video

If your desktop has power, but does not start, follow the steps below.

  1. If the computer was moved recently or this is the original setup, verify that the monitor is connected to the correct video port on the computer.

  2. Run a monitor self-test. Refer to the product information or user guide for the specific monitor for self-test procedures. Some monitors do not support this feature.

  3. If possible, try another monitor.

  4. Power off the computer. Disconnect external devices (printers, scanners, flash drives, iPods, etc.). Power the computer ON with all the devices removed. Reconnect the devices one at a time, testing after each reconnection.

  5. Power off the computer. Remove all newly added hardware.

  6. Power off the computer. Remove the chassis lid and search for any loose screws or connections. Verify all cards in the computer are seated properly. Press down firmly on both ends of all data cables in the computer.

  7. Press down firmly on all memory cards in the computer.
Note: If the computer has been running, do not touch the processor due to heat. Power on the Computer.

  8. Power off the computer. Remove all peripheral device cards from inside the computer except the video card and, if necessary, the hard disk controller card. Put the peripheral device cards back into the computer one at a time (make sure the computer is powered down when installing cards), testing between each, to attempt to isolate the defective card.

  9. If applicable, reseat the memory, the video card, and the hard disk controller card.

  10. Reseat data cables to all drives and controllers. At the same time, check for bent or broken pins.
Note: Verify that the pin 1 connection on both ends of the data cables is correct. Typically, Floppy drive, Parallel ATA and Serial ATA cables will be keyed. Check to make sure the cables are being reinstalled properly.

  11. Try any hard disk drives connected to the secondary connector if present, IDE or SATA. The optical drive(s) may need to be disconnected to complete this step.

  12. Disconnect the power and data cables to the drives one drive at a time. Be sure the power is OFF before disconnecting or reconnecting any devices. Reconnect the cables, and test after each drive. Listen for the fan to spin up or watch for lights on the front of the computer when the power is turned on. Reconnect the drive before disconnecting the next drive.
